The Best Engagement Photo Locations in Edmonton: A Photographer’s Complete Guide

Alberta Legislature Grounds

The mix of beautiful architecture, gardens and green space make the Alberta Legislature grounds a perfect location for engagement sessions because of how many different looks we can create for you at one location.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4Wv8aRT1W67vyCWL6

Features: Architecture, stair cases, gardens, green space, variety

Aesthetic: Elegant, romantic, timeless, fashion-forward, editorial
Cost/Permit: Paid parking - We suggest parking at the Impark lot 237 on 108th Street as it provides easy access to the Legislature through Violet King Henry Plaza.
Ease of Access: Easy — nearby parking and relatively short distances between main photo areas.

Why We Love it

The Alberta Legislature grounds is an excellent engagement session location for couples who are looking for their photos to feel elegant and timeless. There is a great combination of formal architecture, mature trees, open lawns and garden spaces, which means that we can create several different looks without have to drive to another location.

What to Wear

This location works particularly well with classic and elevated outfits. The formal architecture and manicured grounds give you an opportunity to dress up a little more than you might for a purely natural outdoor location.

A white or ivory dress is a particularly popular choice for engagement sessions and photographs beautifully against the stone and surrounding greenery. A midi or full-length dress with some movement helps to create beautiful photographs as you walk through the grounds.

For men, semi-formal works extremely well here. A black, navy or neutral suit without the tie, or dress pants paired with a crisp white or black dress shirt, complements the classic setting without making the session feel overly formal. A polished, slightly relaxed look often photographs better for engagement photos.

The goal isn't for both of you to look perfectly matched. Coordinated colours and similar levels of formality usually look much more natural than wearing identical colours.

For this particular location, we'd lean toward black, white, cream, beige, navy and other understated tones that complement the architecture and greenery without competing with the setting.

Government House

two lovers share a romantic kiss under the stone porch on Edmonton's Government house

Government house is a great location for classically romantic portraits. We especially love using the covered porch at the front of the building.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Jx6xhqyFAc2uL2aEA

Features: Architecture, stair cases, covered porch, green space, river views a short walk away

Aesthetic: Elegant, romantic, editorial
Cost/Permit: Parking is free and there is no permit required to shoot here.
Ease of Access: Easy — parking on site with paved paths and manicured lawns.

Why We Love it

Government House is one of our favourite Edmonton engagement locations for couples looking for a classic, editorial and romantic feel. The real standout is the covered stone porch and front steps, which create an incredibly elegant backdrop for portraits.

The combination of historic architecture, stonework and the symmetry of the entrance gives these photographs a timeless quality that doesn't depend on trendy scenery. We especially love using the stairs and covered patio for more intentional, editorial portraits before moving around the grounds for softer, more relaxed images.

If you're drawn to classic architecture, elegant portraits and a slightly more elevated fashion-forward look, Government House is a fantastic choice.

What to Wear

Because of the classic architecture and formal character of Government House, we strongly recommend dressing up for this location. The setting naturally lends itself to a more formal or semi-formal wardrobe, and casual clothing can feel visually out of place against the stone architecture and elegant surroundings.

For women, a dress or elevated outfit works particularly well here. A white or ivory dress is a beautiful choice for engagement photos, while a longer dress, midi dress or more sophisticated silhouette can really complement the architecture.

For men, we'd suggest dress pants with a crisp button-down shirt, a blazer, or a full suit depending on how formal you want to go. Black, navy, charcoal, white and other classic neutral tones work especially well with the stone exterior.

If you're planning two outfits, we'd make both looks relatively polished rather than going from formal to very casual. Government House is one of those locations where being slightly overdressed is much better than being underdressed. The more elevated your wardrobe, the more naturally it fits into the editorial, classically romantic feel of the setting.

The University of Alberta Old Arts Building and Rutherford House

The University of Alberta’s Old Arts building is one of the most versatile locations in Edmonton for engagement sessions.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5cuFMDhVdNMoK1Fc9

Features: Multiple backdrops, indoor/outdoor, historic architecture, vines & trellises, mature trees, fall colours

Aesthetic: Classic, timeless, romantic, elegant
Cost/Permit: Paid parking in lot 700 just off Saskatchewan drive provides the easiest access. A $25 photography permit is required.
Ease of Access: Easy — parking on site with paved paths and manicured lawns.

Why We Love it

One of our favourite things about the Old Arts Building and Rutherford House area is the variety it gives us in a single location. We can move between different historic buildings, staircases, pathways and green spaces to create a gallery that feels much more varied than a typical park setting.

The Old Arts Building is a particular standout, especially when the vines and trellises covering the building are in full colour. In the fall, when the leaves turn deep red, the combination of the historic architecture and vibrant foliage is magical.

We also love having both indoor and outdoor options. Edmonton weather doesn't always cooperate with our plans, so having indoor spaces available nearby gives us more flexibility if the weather turns cold, rainy or otherwise unpleasant. It also means we can incorporate both looks into the session rather than relying entirely on outdoor scenery.

Overall, this is a great choice for couples who want architectural interest, natural surroundings and plenty of variety without having to travel between multiple locations.

What to Wear

One of the best things about the Old Arts Building and Rutherford House is how flexible this location is when it comes to style. You can dress the session up or keep it relaxed, and both approaches work naturally with the surroundings.

For a more elevated look, women can go with a white or ivory engagement dress, or a midi dress. Men can wear a suit, dress pants and a button-down, or another polished semi-formal combination. This gives the session a more classic and editorial feel.

If your style is more casual and modern, that works just as well. Women can opt for a simple dress, skirt or elevated everyday outfit, while men could wear chinos or jeans with a button-down, sweater, polo or even a clean white T-shirt and white sneakers.

If you're planning two outfits, this is a great location to change up the level of formality. You could start with a more polished look and then switch into something more casual for the second half of the session, giving your gallery two noticeably different feels.

Ultimately, there's no single “right” way to dress for this location. Whether you're drawn to elegant and polished or relaxed and casual, the variety here gives us plenty of ways to make your outfits feel like they belong.

The Walterdale Bridge & Queen Elizabeth Hill

A couple share a romantic kiss while being framed in Edmonton's Walterdale bridge with the city in the background.

The breathtaking view of Edmonton’s city skyline from the Queen Elizabeth Hill is a great option for couples who want a modern, dramatic feel to end their engagement session.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jTaJTMeQWsdBei2S6

Features: River valley views, Walterdale Bridge, City Skyline

Aesthetic: Romantic, modern, dramatic
Cost/Permit: Free parking near the Queen Elizabeth Park Washrooms
Ease of Access: Moderate — While it’s a short walk from the parking lot, the hill to the city view is quite steep.

Why We Love it

Queen Elizabeth Park is a great choice for couples who want their engagement photos to have a strong sense of place. The hilltop viewpoint gives you an incredible view over the North Saskatchewan River Valley, with the Walterdale Bridge creating a dramatic focal point in the background.

Unlike some of our other recommended locations, this spot is really about the view and so it’s not quite as versatile for an entire session. Because of this, we recommend Queen Elizabeth Park as a second location during a two-location engagement session. Pairing it with a location that offers more variety close by gives you the best of both worlds — you can spend the first part of your session exploring a location with multiple backdrops, then finish here as the evening light gets beautiful and capture a few dramatic, wide-open portraits with the Walterdale Bridge behind you.

It's also a great choice for couples who want photographs that feel distinctly Edmonton. The Walterdale Bridge and river valley immediately establish where you are.

What to Wear

Because the setting is open and natural, there's no particular style you need to follow — instead, think about the feeling you want your photographs to have.

For women, a long, flowing dress can create beautiful movement and a more dramatic, romantic look, especially with the evening light and the open view. If you want something more playful and relaxed, jeans with a cute top, a casual dress, or another everyday outfit you feel great in can work just as well.

For men, we'd keep things semi-casual at most. A full suit can feel a little out of place against the relaxed, natural setting, while chinos or jeans paired with a button-down, sweater, polo or clean T-shirt work beautifully.

If you're doing a two-location session, this is also a great place to change up your outfits while keeping the overall feel cohesive. You don't need to match each other — in fact, we'd avoid being too matchy-matchy. Instead, think about choosing outfits that have a similar level of formality and complement each other's colours and overall style.

For example, if she's wearing a flowing, romantic dress, he could choose dressier trousers and a button-down. If she's going for jeans and a casual top, he could keep things relaxed with jeans or chinos and a simple shirt.

The goal is coordinated, not matching. Your outfits should look like they belong together while still feeling like your individual styles.

The George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza

The George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza is our go-to location for spring blossoms! If you want a playful, whimsical feel to your session this is the place for you.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Zro6s4p6zhGj8aaZA

Features: Spring blossoms, flowering trees, green space, open lawns

Aesthetic: Romantic, playful, whimsical
Cost/Permit: Free parking lot on 96a Street NW
Ease of Access: Easy — Flat terrain and paved walking trails .

Why We Love it

The George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza really shines in the spring, when the stunning pink and white blossoming trees come into bloom throughout the plaza. They're the reason we love this location — the blossoms add a beautiful burst of colour and create a look that feels fresh, romantic and playful.

But there's more here than just the flowering trees. The plaza also offers walking trails, green space and manicured lawns, giving us enough variety to build an entire engagement session without needing to move to another location.

It's a particularly good choice for couples who want their photos to feel lighthearted and natural rather than overly formal. We can incorporate plenty of walking, movement and candid moments, or even slow things down with a relaxed picnic-style portion of the session.

While the location is beautiful throughout the warmer months, we don't typically recommend it as much in late summer or fall. The blossoming trees are what make this spot special, and the location is at its most vibrant when they're in bloom in the spring.

If you're planning a spring engagement session and love the idea of colourful blossoms, natural greenery and a playful atmosphere, this is definitely one to consider.

What to Wear

This is one of the more casual and playful locations in our guide, so you don't need to feel like you have to dress up. The colourful blossoms and relaxed surroundings work especially well with outfits that feel natural, comfortable and true to your everyday style.

For women, casual or semi-casual dresses work beautifully here — especially lighter colours, soft patterns or outfits with a little movement. You can also go with a more relaxed combination of pants, jeans or a skirt paired with a cute top or sweater.

For men, collared polo shirts, button-downs, chinos, jeans or clean T-shirts all fit naturally with the setting. You don't need a suit or particularly formal outfit for this location.

If you're planning two outfits, we'd keep both looks in the casual-to-semi-casual range and focus on coordinating your colours and overall feel rather than trying to match exactly.

This is a great location to let your personalities come through. Comfortable, colourful and playful outfits can complement the spring blossoms without competing with them.

Kind Ice Cream

For couples looking for a candid, playful feel to their engagement session an activity like going for ice cream is perfect! We love Kind Ice cream and their 112 Ave location is a great setting for engagement photos.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4VSScjaTibg5EmRq7

Features: Ice cream, urban setting, street scene, graffiti

Aesthetic: Playful, carefree, candid, modern, whimsical
Cost/Permit: No permit required but be sure to ask permission before taking any photos inside a private business. Street parking on 112 Ave NW
Ease of Access: Easy — Flat terrain, sidewalks and crosswalks.

Why We Love it

Sometimes the best engagement photos happen when you're doing something together instead of simply posing for the camera, and that's exactly why we love this little ice cream spot.

The shop itself is incredibly cute, and we've always been able to take a few photographs inside when we've stopped for ice cream. Just be sure to ask the staff first, as permission and policies can change. Of course, grabbing an ice cream together is also a pretty great way to start an engagement session.

The surrounding streets add another layer to the session, with fun neighbourhood character and plenty of little urban details to work into the photographs. We can wander around, grab some candid walking shots and let the session unfold naturally rather than spending the entire time posing.

It's also one of our favourite options for couples who are a little nervous about being photographed. Having an activity gives you something to focus on, which can make it much easier to relax and interact naturally. Instead of wondering what to do with your hands or where to look, you can simply enjoy an ice cream date together while we capture it.

And honestly, who doesn't want an ice cream date as part of their engagement session?

What to Wear

This is definitely one of our most casual engagement session locations, so leave the formalwear at home. The relaxed neighbourhood setting and ice cream date work best when your outfits feel fun, comfortable and like something you'd actually wear together on a summer afternoon.

For women, a cute summer dress, casual sundress, jeans with a tank or a simple top are all great options. Light, summery colours and playful patterns can work particularly well with the colourful setting.

For men, we'd keep things relaxed with chinos or jeans, clean sneakers and a T-shirt. If you want to dress it up slightly, khakis or chinos with a collared shirt or polo are about as formal as we'd go.

This is also a location where you don't need to worry about coordinating perfectly. Choose outfits that complement each other without matching, and focus on looking comfortable and like yourselves.

The goal here is less “engagement photo outfit” and more “we're going out for ice cream together and happen to look really good doing it.”

Devon Voyageur Park

For couples who want a natural setting full of drama and romantic vibes we love Devon Voyageur Park!

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CWurkDyBcJs7iv2Q8

Features: Water views, Riverbanks , tree-lined paths, forest, green space

Aesthetic: Dramatic, romantic, natural, fairytale
Cost/Permit: No permit required but there is paid parking Friday-Sunday.
Ease of Access: Moderate— mostly flat trails, but some rocky and muddy paths get steep near the river.

Why We Love it

Devon Voyageur Park is one of our favourite locations for couples who want a little adventure and a lot of variety. You can easily spend an entire engagement session here without running out of interesting places to photograph, making it one of the more versatile outdoor locations on our list.

The combination of the North Saskatchewan River, dramatic riverbank and mature, tree-lined paths gives us a huge range of looks throughout the session. We can start among the greenery, wander through the winding paths, move down toward the river and even get into the water for something completely different.

We also love how large and naturally secluded the park feels. There are plenty of green spaces tucked away from the main areas, so it's much easier to find quiet spots where you can relax and enjoy the session without feeling like everyone in the park is watching you.

And then there's the drama. The riverbank, towering trees and water create some seriously beautiful photographs, especially when the light is right. This is one of those locations where the landscape can become a major part of the story rather than simply sitting in the background.

If you want a location where you can explore, move, get a little adventurous and still have plenty of romantic portraits, Devon Voyageur Park is a fantastic choice.

What to Wear

For Devon Voyageur Park, we'd recommend leaning into the romance and drama of the setting. Flowing dresses are especially beautiful here, and we love the way a white or ivory dress stands out against the greenery, river and natural surroundings.

If you're planning to get into the water, a midi-length dress can be a great option. It gives you some of that beautiful movement while being a little easier to manage near the river. That said, don't feel like you have to wear a dress — we've had plenty of brides wear pants with a cute top or a more relaxed outfit, and those can look fantastic here too.

For men, our go-to recommendation is smart semi-formal. Chinos with clean sneakers and a button-down or polo are a great combination for this location. You could also dress it up a little further with trousers and a more polished shirt if that's more your style.

If you're planning two outfits, we'd keep the overall feeling romantic and relaxed rather than overly formal. And as always, aim to coordinate rather than match — choose colours and levels of formality that complement each other while still letting both of your personalities come through.

Edmonton River Valley Swing

The Edmonton River Valley is a great location for engagement photos. We particularly love using the area near the Dawson Park East entrance because the rope swing is so perfect.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/atcJYjkS5Qbp1Y466

Features: Rope swing, city views, river views, forest, scenic overlook, trails

Aesthetic: Adventurous, playful, romantic, carefree
Cost/Permit: No permits required. Street parking on Ada Blvd NW. Walking path via the Dawson Park East entrance down to the River valley swing takes about 10 minutes.
Ease of Access: Moderate to challenging — This location involves more walking than many of the other locations on this post, including some steep inclines and uneven terrain. It's absolutely manageable, but we'd recommend comfortable footwear for the walk before switching to your cute shoes at the bottom of the hill.

Why We Love it

The rope swing is a huge part of why we love this location. It's romantic, playful and just plain fun, and it gives us a natural element to incorporate into the session. We can have you swing together, interact with each other and create some really genuine moments while still giving you plenty of direction along the way.

It also creates a look that's quite different from a traditional engagement portrait. There's something about seeing a couple on a rope swing together, surrounded by the river valley, that makes the photographs feel young, carefree and adventurous.

And then we can leave the swing behind and explore the rest of the park. There are beautiful trails and wooded areas to work with before hiking up the valley to the dramatic overlook spots, where you can see down over the North Saskatchewan River and out toward the Edmonton skyline.

We love how much variety we can create here. Playful photographs on the swing, romantic portraits among the trees, and dramatic images overlooking the river valley and city can all be part of the same session.

If you want your engagement photos to feel fun, romantic and a little adventurous, this is one of our favourite locations.

What to Wear

Because this location involves hiking down into the river valley and moving between several different areas, we recommend treating it as a one-outfit location. There isn't really a convenient place to change, and you'll want to be comfortable enough to walk the trails and explore the river.

Smart casual is the perfect middle ground here. A dress can look absolutely beautiful, especially if you want to lean into the romantic side of the location, but pants and a cute top work just as well. The most important thing is choosing something you can comfortably move around in.

For men, our best advice is simple: match the overall vibe of your partner without trying to match her outfit exactly. If she's wearing a dress, chinos with a polo or button-down are a great complement. If she's going for jeans and a tank or another casual look, jeans with a clean T-shirt or even a casual bowling shirt can fit the vibe perfectly.

Think coordinated, not matching. You want your outfits to feel like they belong together while still looking like two people with their own style. And don't forget the footwear — comfortable shoes are a must for this one (or at least bring a pair to walk down in before changing at the bottom of the hill).

Strathearn Park Lookout

Strathearn Park Lookout is a great location for fall colours and a dramatic city overlook.

Google Maps Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3jNHhiW4a9MQMXmc6

Features: City views, river valley views, fall foliage, golden larches

Aesthetic: Scenic, cinematic, natural, romantic
Cost/Permit: No permits required. Street parking on Strathearn Crescent NW
Ease of Access: Easy — A short walk from the street yields spectacular views and ample green space for a variety of portraits.

Why We Love it

Strathearn Park Lookout is one of our go-to choices for fall and autumn colours. When the leaves are at their peak, the combination of rich yellow, orange and red foliage, golden larches and sweeping views over the river valley creates an incredible backdrop for engagement photos.

We also love the beautiful Edmonton views. From the lookout, we can create those big, dramatic portraits with the river valley and city stretching out behind you, while the surrounding trees and pathways give us opportunities for more intimate and natural photographs.

The larches are a particular favourite of ours. When they turn that brilliant golden yellow in the fall, they add an incredible pop of colour and give this location a look that's difficult to replicate elsewhere in the city.

If you're planning a fall engagement session and want gorgeous autumn colour combined with dramatic Edmonton views, Strathearn Park Lookout is one we'd put very high on the list.

What to Wear

Because we especially love Strathearn Park Lookout in the fall, we'd recommend leaning into the season with outfits that feel warm, polished and natural against the autumn colours.

For a semi-formal look, women could choose a dress, midi dress or another elevated outfit, while men can complement that with chinos or dress pants and a button-down shirt. Earthy neutrals, creams, warm tones and other understated colours can work beautifully with the fall foliage.

For a more casual look, jeans paired with a nice sweater, cardigan or casual top are great options for women. Men can keep things relaxed with jeans or chinos and a sweater, button-down, polo or clean T-shirt.

As always, think coordinated rather than matching. Guys should choose an outfit that complements the overall style and level of formality their partner is wearing. If she's dressed up, he should lean a little more polished; if she's keeping things casual, there's no need for him to be overly formal either.

The goal is to create outfits that feel like they belong together and fit naturally into the beautiful fall setting.

Choosing the Right Edmonton Engagement Photo Location

With so many beautiful places to choose from, finding the right engagement photo location in Edmonton can feel overwhelming. The best location isn't necessarily the one with the most impressive backdrop — it's the one that fits your personalities, your style and the experience you want to have together.

Start by thinking about the overall feeling you'd like your photographs to have. Do you picture something elegant and romantic, playful and colourful, natural and adventurous, or modern and urban? Edmonton has locations to suit all of these styles, and choosing a setting that matches your vision can make a huge difference.

Season is another important consideration. Some locations are beautiful year-round, while others really shine during a particular season. Spring blossoms, summer greenery, fall colour and winter snow can completely change the look of the same location.

It's also worth thinking about how much variety you want. Some locations can easily accommodate an entire session, while others are better suited to a shorter portion of a two-location session. Consider parking, walking distance, hills, trails and whether you'll need to change outfits.

Finally, think about what you'll wear. Formal outfits can complement elegant historic settings, while casual clothing may be a better fit for an urban or natural location. Your outfits don't need to match, but they should complement the overall feel of the location and each other.

And remember — you don't have to figure it out alone. We've photographed engagement sessions throughout Edmonton and can help you choose a location based on your style, the season and the kind of photographs you're hoping to create.
